Bright, Fun, And Sun-Filled Phoenix Backyard Wedding

Nothing was raining on Molly and Chelsea’s Phoenix backyard celebration. Almost. The morning of the wedding, rain clouds dispersed and the skies filled with desert sunshine—the perfect wedding day weather. With the help of their loved ones, wedding planner Bloom & Blueprint Event Co., and a talented team of vendors, this couple was able to transform an ordinary backyard space into the dreamiest wedding venue.

Their big day was filled with sentimental and nostalgic pieces. From the wedding venue—Molly’s parents backyard and the place their love blossomed—to the hand-written and personalized vows. Every wedding day detail was carefully curated with intentionality and purpose in mind.

We can’t take our eyes off the sweet, memorable moments that were captured by Mary Costa Photography. Grab your tissues and get ready to soak up this powerful and heartfelt ceremony. It perfectly celebrated both Molly and Chelsea’s love for each other and marriage equality.

More From Mary Costa On This Phoenix Backyard Wedding

Molly and Chelsea’s wedding was heartfelt, beautifully styled, and full of joy. It took place in Molly’s parents’ backyard and was full of personal touches. It was pouring rain the morning of their wedding—which is a rarity in Phoenix, Arizona. As luck would have it the sun came out just after Molly and Chelsea finished getting ready, and the talented team of planners from Bloom & Blueprint Event Co broke down dozens of small tents to create a beautiful space in record time. Their ceremony was incredibly heartfelt, including a candle lighting with all the guests. We also caught the last bit of daylight in the Phoenix mountains. Such a beautiful couple and a stunning day!

A Backyard Turned Dream Wedding Venue

We really loved how the design came together. We worked very hard coming up with concepts and colors and sourcing pieces for our day and we transformed the backyard into a “venue” that other people started asking to get married in!

Nothing Could Rain On Molly And Chelsea’s Parade

Our wedding was extremely memorable. It started with the rainiest day of 2020—a flash flood warning, thunder, lightning, and a torrential downpour covering the Phoenix valley. We had our first look under the eaves of the hotel we were staying at. Suddenly the rain stopped and the clouds parted. We ran out into the sunshine to get as many photos as we could before it started to rain again—but it never did! Sun poured over the yard and we had the chance to have a gorgeous outdoor  ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner. As guests took their seats, the grass was so wet from the rain that the chairs were sinking, and people were dropping like flies. Our dresses were muddy and our shoes were dark brown from all the mud, but at that point we didn’t care!

A Unity Ceremony To Honor Loved One’s Support

We said personal vows that made us sob and we’re not sure anyone actually understood what we said—haha! We also had friends of ours read the Marriage Equality Supreme Court decision during our ceremony—it was an extremely powerful and heartfelt moment. We also had a reserve unity candle ceremony. We had each of our guests light a candle to represent the light, warmth, and love of their support as an LGBTQ+ couple.

A Venue With Sentimental Value

Our venue was Molly’s parents’ backyard. It was the place we spent our high school summers together when we were just falling in love. It was nice to get married at home and have that additional sentimental value.

DIY Signage Doubles As Wedding Keepsake

Molly’s Mom learned to use a laser cutter to design, cut, paint, and display all of the signage at the wedding! It was an incredible gift that saved us a ton of money and really enhanced the look of the decor. Molly also designed and printed the invitations.

Embroidered bridal denim jackets, disco balls, and a bold, orange color palette—talk about a totally groovy wedding. Golden Vibes Photo and her talented team of wedding vendors made their 60s inspired wedding dreams come to life! Together, they took inspiration from the “flower power” era then blended retro and modern elements together.

To add to the groovy glamorous vibe, one of the brides wore a lace, wide-leg jumpsuit paired with a Bridget Bardot-type hairstyle. The other bride rocked an off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown paired with bold, rainbow earrings—very Stevie Nicks-inspired. While the wedding day fashion was—dare we say—bitchin’, the floral tambourines really made this wedding unique and inspiring.

Florals Star In This Upstairs Atlanta Wedding *

Florals Star In This Upstairs Atlanta Wedding *

Stairway to heaven? More like stairway to an epic Upstairs Atlanta wedding. With breathtaking florals, show-stopping fashion, and the addition of a rose unity ceremony, this love fest was anything but ordinary. With the help of wedding planner Smooth as Butter Weddings, Sarah and Brittany crafted a beautiful, fun-filled celebration. Their wedding was seriously representative of their love for one another.

Food and florals were the couple’s top wedding planning priorities. The result was a feast for the eyes and the stomach. Florist Flaura Botanica dressed the industrial wedding space with jaw-dropping arrangements and an eye-catching, asymmetrical arch. The arch was so beautiful it was repurposed and used as a sweetheart table backdrop

Photographer and Junebug member The Tinsley Co captured every out-of-the-box detail that made this celebration one to remember. Get ready to stuff your face and your Pinterest boards with wedding planning tips and inspiration from Atlanta couple, Sarah and Brittany.

Being Present On Your Wedding Day

After arriving at the venue, we took a few minutes to grab a sneak peek at the ceremony and reception space. Mostly to soak up and witness our vision brought to life. In that moment, we truly had the opportunity to marvel at every detail that we had thought so long and hard about. It allowed for us to have a moment alone—feeling present on our wedding day.

Food, Food, And More Food

One of the most important elements for our wedding was food. This ties back to our desire to create an intimate dinner party vibe. We wanted the food to stand out as something that would be talked about by our guests long after they left our wedding. Endive Catering knocked it out of the park. To say the guests left full—and happy—is an understatement.

Show-Stopping Florals In This Upstairs Atlanta Wedding

Florals hand-down stole the show. Each and every aspect of our wedding was enhanced due to the amazing florals that Flaura Botanica created.

Involving Loved Ones In A Personalized Ceremony

When it came to the role of our officiant, we knew we wanted someone who loved and supported us from the beginning. Having a close friend officiate our ceremony allowed us to personalize the script. It was important to have wording that felt representative of our love for one another.

Unique Rose Unity Ceremony

A personalized and unique aspect of our wedding was the addition of a rose unity ceremony. Roses are an ancient symbol of love and the goal of this ritual was to create a way to express our love. When words fail or when the challenges of life or marriage begin to weigh, one of us is to go out, get a rose, and put it in the special vase used during our ceremony. A great reminder of that moment and the love we felt for one another on our wedding day.

A Dream Team Of Wedding Vendors

The best advice we received was from our photographer, The Tinsley Co. She advised us to think of the vendor-search as if we’re creating our dream team. A team that we trust to bring our vision to life. Through every vendor interview, we thought through not only the vendor’s skill set, but their personality and how they would work collectively with the rest of our team.

Gorgeously Detailed Union On Eighth Wedding *

Gorgeously Detailed Union On Eighth Wedding *

Matching wedding party baseball jerseys, furry friends in flower collars, and epic bridal fashion complete with a fringe wedding dress and seriously killer bridal pantsuit–what more could you ask for in a wedding? Whitney and Haley’s Union On Eighth nuptials were focused less on trends and more on details that they loved. The results were stunning, to say the least.

With the help of planner Simply XO Events, the couple transformed the old mechanic shop into a wedding venue. The building was filled with bold florals from Ida Mayes Floristry, romantic table settings, and a huge hanging neon sign from Brite Light Tribe. But enough about the decor,  the fringey free-spirited Tara Laurenwedding dress looked dazzling paired with the clean-cut Rime Arodaky and Kira Kouture bridal suit combo.

Memorable Wedding Gifts

I did a boudoir shoot and gifted Haley a leather book of the photos. I wanted this to be something that we could look back on when we are older and remember who we were at this stage in life. Haley gifted me a ring that she had custom-made for me. She took a few stones from one of my Nana’s rings and had a jeweler create the most perfectly dainty gold ring. My Nana was my favorite person in the whole wide world, and unfortunately, she passed away years ago. She wasn’t able to attend our wedding or ever know Haley. So Haley wanted me to always have a piece of her with me, especially on such a special day. One of the stones was a blue sapphire, which made it my “something blue” too.

A Special Ceremony Musician

We had a musician perform during the ceremony, and he was someone that we had heard at dinner one night a couple of years prior to us even being engaged. That night years ago I told Haley that if we ever got married, I wanted him there, and proceeded to wait for him to finish so that I could get his contact information.

Creating The Wedding Day Aesthetic

I try not to decorate or design based on trends because I know that those will fade. We applied this same thought process to our wedding. We began choosing designs and items that we loved and that we knew we would love for a long, long time. Once we had narrowed things down, we created a mood board to get a good idea of how everything would work together.

Why A Union On Eighth Wedding

We chose our venue because it felt like us. It wasn’t a brand new building with brand new light fixtures and no character. It was an old mechanic shop turned wedding venue, and the moment you walk in, you just know that those walls have held love, life, and stories.

Gorgeous And Sustainable Swan Falls Micro Wedding *

Gorgeous And Sustainable Swan Falls Micro Wedding *

From the sweeping views of a canyon and river to a camper picnic with close friends, these gorgeous Swan Falls nuptials were everything we could want in a micro wedding. Like many other couples, Dani and Whitney’s larger wedding was canceled because of COVID. But the two didn’t let that stop them from promising to love each other forever.

Surrounded by loved ones, they tied the knot overlooking Swan Falls before celebrating with a cheese board, champagne, and a cake from Figgy Bakes in front of their camper. All decor was reused, borrowed, or repurposed, making for one intimate and sustainable affair–and if you know Junebug, you know how much we love sustainable weddings!

If you love adventuring, epic motorcycle portraits, and boho wedding fashion, you’re not going to want to miss these photos beautifully captured by Jackie and Michael.

Why A Swan Falls Micro Wedding

Initially, we planned a bigger wedding, but because of COVID-19, we decided to elope instead of cancel and make it more intimate and special for just us. We had just a few close friends and our vintage camper and put it all together ourselves with the help of our friends. We knew that it was all that mattered–a few friends, music, and us.

Reusing Items For A Sustainable Day

There were a lot of sustainable touches. We hung the foliage on the camper, used rugs and plates we already had, etc. The wedding dress was probably the most expensive thing, but everything else was borrowed, repurposed, or used.
